Audience

Audience

As I have decided that I am doing more of an R&B artist the audience is mainly going to be female because a survey says that 7/10 listens of rand b are female audiences. Although they are going to be aimed at females the artist/group still has to have characteristics that will attract the male audience also so then therefore their fan base will wider.

When looking at R&B it can range from people aged 14 to 40 because of how many R&B artist are in existence, also because this genre of music has been around for a very long time and although the music has changed over the years it still promotes a similar message which is can range from pain and heartache to love and passion.

R&B is so important in the industry because it is one of the type of music that anyone can relate to but with a nice soft melody under it. This is also a reason I have chosen this genre because I feel like this type music can relate with everyone

Ways of promotion

When being an artist it is important that social presents is their because it is way to interact and connect with your fans not to mention the easiest free way of promoting yourself. Its best to be on ever type of social network possible as you will be able to reach to every single on your fans.

Instagram, Twitter, Facebook are the main three that are able to help promote yourself well because when you are an artist/group you should think of yourself and as a brand. Like any brand if you don’t promote then people will be unaware about you, this therefore means less fans and less gigs.
YouTube is also another media network in which works well with promotion as you can pay for an advert on there so either way people will see it before they are able to watch the video they originally wanted to watch. This will then force people to listen to you witch will gain more fans and more YouTube views and subscribers.

Having a website is not really as popular as it used to be only because other methods have taken over however it is good to have a website 1. focus on the older generation that are not really interested in social media and 2. because its professional and to anyone that you want to sign you it looks as if you 'mean business' which will attract you to them more and 3. there for people to find out further information.

Posters/flyers are and will always be a good way to promote any information because when people travel they will be able to see it. this will give you a chance to put your gig dates of there etc.. so this will also help gain a fan base.

When creating a poster I feel it has to stand out otherwise it will not get noticed.bright colours and well photographed picture should be used and then people will be enticed by the poster and be encouraged to listen to your music.

Research

Throughout doing my research I have been looking at different types of music videos based on a vibe of how I want my video.

I decided, because I am I huge fan of both old school and new school music, to examine each genre of music videos and this is what I found.

While watching the first video 'Freak Like Me' by Adina Howard I can see that all the lyrics a quite sexualised the video is quite tamed down. To begin with the conventional car scene introduces the video, back in the 90's this was a very common way to introduce the video. Another conventional scene that was incorporated into the video was the typical house party and also back ground dances were in multiple scenes of the song despite the song is not a very upbeat song.

When focusing on the transitions of each scene of the video, one basic transition is used through the whole video. this transitions consist of a simple flash of white light while it changed from scene to scene. This gives it a simple effect and allows the video to flow quick and some what make you not really notice the transitions. I believe this has been done to give the audience chance to focus on the detail into each clip rather then them get distracted from complexed transitions. This also ties in to the era that this play was produce in because from seeing very simple transitioning shows that they was not very advanced yet. In addition to this the quality of the video is quite poor and seem to have a blur effect over it. This does make it slightly difficult to see what is going In the video.

There was only really three types of shots used with in the video which was close up, wide shot and mid shot. this shows that you was able to have a different view point on something that might be the same scene. by using a range of shots allows shots of the same scene seem like a completely new scene which allowed the song to play to the end with out the view/ audience getting bored of watching the same type of scene. I personally think that by adding many different types of shot keeps the audience entertained because it’s a variety of things for them to see and can stimulate their mind.

There are may other types of shots that could be used however I think that it was more effective by them using less because after all less is more.

The way how they were dressed was a reflection on how they used to dress in that era however because the song is quite sexual the way how they was dress tied in to it, for example they main singer and the dancers were wearing bras and short skits. Although that may not seem that bad in 2014 back in the 90s women never really wore feminine clothes unless they were being a 'video vixen' so that said a lot about the singer and how she was seen with in the public.

Here is the video below:

While watching the second video 'Ride' by Ciara I can see that both the content in the song and the video are very sexualised. As this video was made in 2010 you can see that times have changed dramatically in last 15 years and things that would not be acceptable in the 90's is normal in 00's. The opening scene consists of with a silhouette figure of the singer and then edges into her dancing alone. The way how she is dancing is quite alluring. The fact the she is dancing on her own shows that over the years a sense of impedance was formed for women because it was quite rare for women to be alone in videos without dancers etc.. occupying them. By just having her in the video allows you to just focus on her.

In addition to this I feel that because she is alone in the image allows you to link the song with the actions she is preforming in the video. the back ground is very neutral which also allows you to focus more on her as a dancer.

The different type of shots that were used were close ups, mid shots and cut ins. the use of close ups were effective because it was more intimate with the singer so, it was like she was singing to you personally. The mid shots are what is used in almost every video and are a very conventional shot to use. However the cut-ins which is a shot of a a body part other than the face make the whole experience of watching the video just the more sexualised as the camera would focus on parts of the body that may be desired by the male audience, its as if the camera is forcing your eyes to look at a certain place which may make you feel unconfutable. I personally think that this is an effective way to make the video more entertaining because you eyes are able to look at certain things with out actually moving your eyes.

There were no major transitions however the changing of lighting made it seem like there was a transition. This also was done to help you focus more on the dancing that was going on.

The clothes that she is wearing through the video are very revealing, the reason I would say she has chosen to wear very skimpy clothing is because in this era that is what is in and the lest clothes the more views your video might get especially from a male view point because that what males like and from a female perspective they want to see someone that they can aspire to be like.

My Logo

This is my main logo.

I added colour to this one as I feel like the word BOOM needed to be emphasised. I chose the colour red as it is a very striking colour and would stand out among the rest.

I added the slogan 'believing our own music' to give the word boom a further meaning, while doing my research I found the GOOD Music also did this and that is where it was inspired from.

Believing Our Own Music means being able to create music that is 100% straight from the heart and is a good representation of yourself. in other words being able to believe in your music despite what may be said about.

Research

Def Jam records was founded by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin in 1983. The main reason for the creation of Def jam was to promote a type of music that was thought to be missing from the music world and that type of music was Hip-Hop with a Rock type essence to it.

The logo that was created for Def jam has stayed the same for the whole existence of the label giving the label a clear identity, because it has been around for quite a few years many people will recognize the logo.

The logo is very plan and I think that what makes it so easy to remember. the emphasis of the D and the J, show a link to music because a DJ is someone who plays and promotes music similar to what Def jam records do.

The word 'def' comes from slang created by the African American culture in the Untied States of America with the meaning of cool or excellent and the word jam meaning 'favorite song' also coming from 'black slang' created in the USA. This shows that, although in may not look like it, true thought has been put in to the name and has been executed cleverly. This is because to those who the label is aimed at i.e. the youths of USA predominantly African American youths they would understand and relate to this slang so therefore they will take interest in what the label has to offer.

Good Music was founded in 2004 by Kanye West. over the years music has changed dramatically and in most case lost its true heart however with good music they sign artist that can capture the true essence of real R&B/Hip-Hop yet still add a current twist to it.

This is what allows them to have a specific target audience and crowd that will take time to listen the music produced the good music.
Good music's parent company is indeed Def Jam records the label was able to have the knowledge the history gained from Def Jam records with that knowledge then was able to create music that 'old skool' people would enjoy alone with the more modern audience.

The logo of good music is put together well as there is an angel sitting on top of the word good. As angels are looked at as good, prestigious characters tells the audience that their music is just that 'good' that it is the equal to an angel. when thinking of an angel you also think god and heaven. although no colour is used just by the logo you can see that if it was in colour it would be gold or platinum as those colours are linked with being prestige.

'Getting out our dreams' the definition of the work Good can be seen as inspirational and says to the audience that this is a way for these artist to fulfill their dreams.

My Brief

My Brief

We were given three briefs to choose from and out of the three I have decided to focus on  'Nu-Tunes' (now renamed to 'BOOM Records').

The brief has asked me to help a local band/music artist get on their feet and also help pave a pathway for them to be able to live their dreams. this means that I will have to raise public awareness for the band and also create a 2 minute music video based on one of the songs that the group has created. In order to create a fan base for the artist/group will require social media presence and a lot of promotion.

I have chosen to do this particular brief as I feel I will be able to show my true skills but in a highly challenging way.

My Logo

Research

Warner Bros. Pictures are a very established company and are know for producing movies such as the Hangover and Harry Potter.
Warner Bros. Pictures have been around since the late 1910's and have produced a large amount of movies we enjoy today. The logo can be described as some what heroic in terms of the fact that the main logo looks like a badge that would be worn by some one of authority or maybe a super hero. This may tie in to the type of movies show by this particular production i.e. Miss Congeniality or Superman Returns.

The fact that the logo is gold also ties in to this factor because it is suggesting that every movie that they put out is gold and they are somewhat prestigious because the colour gold is associated with gold.

The back ground that the logo is on is a cloudy sky scene. This may suggest that warner brothers pictures are close above everything else and are closer to heaven this also links to the colour gold as it shows that they are the best that you can get. Another interpretations that you can get from the logo being on a cloudy background in the sky is that they are flying high just like superhero's do this ties to the design of the log as it  looks very heroic.

The contrast of gold on top of the blue makes the gold become very eye catching to the views, the fact that the texture of the sky is quite soft in terms of how the clouds look a bit blurred brings out the shine and hard texture of the logo. The logo also appears to be curving which also give that badge looking appearance but also creates the illusions that the  logo is coming out of the screen some how

Universal Pictures is also a very established company which is known for producing movies such as King Kong and Ted.
Universal Pictures have been around since the early 1910's and have produced mind blowing movies that have scored very high ratings. The logo is very simply and quite self explanatory.

The back ground is based in out of space with a picture of the earth with lights shining in each country, this gives the impression that Universal Picture is a know all around the world and it has a global establishment. The fact that the lights are on shows insinuates that perhaps people are tuning in to something that has been produce by universal pictures. The fact that it showing the world from out of space showing that the productions that they produce are out of this world. The logo in its self 'Universal' is very simple and plan but looks as if it has emerged from the earth as it is also curved like it.

The colour of the back ground help the logo stand out more as that is a slivery tone. this gives the audience a chance to focus on the  name of the production because the back ground in its self is quite eye caching.

Meaning Of An Advert

This advertisement is a polysemic because although this advert is for water, it clearly is just a bench with a quarter of the seat on it. To some people this doesn’t mean an awful lot but because it has the anchorage that says “only use what you need to use” shows that in terms of water is you wouldn’t waste a whole bench on just one person that doesn’t need the space so why should you waste large amounts of water on people that don’t need it?

Meet The Superhumans

Paralympics: MEET THE SUPERHUMANS

From watching then channel 4 Paralympics advert a lot was shown through out. The video was based on people who are some what different to an average person yet are doing the exact same sports that a normal person would do. This is showing determination and is showing that anyone can do anything if they try. Through out the video the intensity of each game was shown an although all of these people have something that could possibly hold them back they have not let stop them from becoming as master at what they do.

The music used through out is very motivational and goes well with the message that is being promoted. What I think is being promoted is strength, this is because despite the fact that these people have a disability they still was determine to take part in a sport that may be very challenging for them. “Forget everything you believe about strength” personally I think this mean that it’s not about strength when it comes to certain things in life it’s about determination.

“Meet the super human’s” this statement is very powerful because to me it separates these people with a disability in a positive way rather then a negative way like people normally perceive them like. This will also make viewer want to watch because it’s using the words super humans witch will make people want to watch because its showing to the audience how significant they are.

All around this advert shows positivity giving the viewers that sense of encouragement because it is saying that if someone who has no legs still runs a race and win in record timing why can you not do anything? The impact that this has on the viewers is basically motivating those who have a better advantage of the people they are watching to go out and do something with their lives.
